Kona Blog #5
Ironman and 70.3 race week in Port Macquarie. If you ever need a good boost of motivation and want to get fired up for training, head to an event and watch the top age-group athletes. There were incredible and frankly mind-blowing performances on Sunday from the Koa Athletes in the full and 70.3, and it’s thrown gasoline and entire trees onto the fire for my training into Cairns and Kona.
The start of the week was light for me as Frankie was leaving on Wednesday, and we had our plans together, so my training got kick-started back into full swing down in Port Mac. Two long rides out on the course, one with the Koa boys for a roll around and the second a solo ride on the entire bike course. The last time I rode this course was back in 2018, and I can confirm the road surface is just as bad as before. But what a course, it’s not easy and keeps people honest.
Two runs, 20kms on the run course to shake the legs out after our long drive down from the Sunny Coast and a shorter run after the spin with the boys on Friday. That’s all that needed to be done over the weekend. Just keep the body moving and get back into training after last week. Genuinely that's all you have time for when coaching at a race; if we had CTL points for the time spent working, I’d be trending upwards.
Six weeks to go to Cairns, and I’m raring to go. The performances from all Koa Athletes over the weekend were great to see and highly inspiring. Big PBs for my athletes racing in the full and 70.3, and I take motivation and learnings from seeing everyone compete and use that in my training. If anyone doesn’t quite understand what I am talking about, look at the Koa Sports socials over the next few days (Instagram, Facebook, Spotify etc.), and you’ll know. Overall wins in Ironman and 70.3. Course records, Multiple AG wins and PBs. If that doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what will.
Looking forward to building my CTL back up and getting back into my routine again, expect to see another 24 hour training week with all the swim, bike and run.

Small Drop in CTL, But just managing the systems. Still on Track
